Hoverboards have been banned from all campus buildings at Northwestern University, Loyola University, DePaul University, and UIC in the state of Illinois. However, Columbia University and University of Chicago have not implemented any formal policy regarding hoverboards.

The Chicago Department of Transportation does not regulate hoverboards, and the Chicago Police Department could not find any specific regulations for hoverboards in the Municipal Code. However, there are regulations in place for skateboards, Segways, and other toy vehicles prohibiting their use on roadways and sidewalks in business districts.

Hoverboards are also banned from entering trains operated by Metra, and they are prohibited on vehicles operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).
